Research:

I study the role phylogenetics can play in illuminating the mechanisms, rates, and patterns of diversification and speciation in herpetological systems. My interests break down along three main lines of inquiry:

1) Building trees:

How do choices we make in data and model selection and format affect our phylogenetic output? How can we be sure that these choices are appropriate, and how can we statistically decide which choices are better?

2) Using trees:

What can phylogenies tell us about how evolution happens? How can we map trait evolution, and what can independent contrasts tell us about morphological evolution and the rise and fall of biodiversity?

3) Hugging trees:

How can we use phylogenies to improve our conservation efforts? How can we quantify phylogenetic diversity, and what should we do about it once we've counted it? Are there ways to more effectively spend our conservation dollars, and can phylogenetics help us find those ways?
